The otherworldly Punta Tragara Hotel

Perched high above the sea overlooking the sun bleached Capri coastline and the Faraglioni rock formations sits the otherworldly Punta Tragara Hotel.

Built in 1920 with the great Swiss architect Le Corbusier at the helm of the original design, Punta Tragara was once the regal family villa of Lombardy-born engineer Emilio Errico Vismara.

The architecture and interior spaces of the hotel, which opened in 1973, have remained integral to its beauty, with Le Corbusier describing the building as “a kind of architectural bloom, an extension of the rock, an offspring of the island, a plant-like phenomenon”.

And in a place so rich with natural beauty, it is no surprise that Le Corbusier approached the design with a sort of luxurious simplicity; balancing the sympathetic and unassuming with the elegant and striking.

While uniformed in their charming Italian detail, no two of the forty four rooms are the same. Some are modern, some traditional. Some have large terraces that open up to views over Marina Piccola, while others enjoy poolside settings. One thing they all share is the back drop of the Capri sea, where light blues gently hug the shore with the same relaxed pace that everything and everyone in Italy seems to operate at.

 Mamma Restaurant

Mamma Restaurant

In keeping with its five star status, guests can take their pick between two pools and two restaurants, Monzu and Mamma. While Monzu features historical Capri favourites and classic Neapolitan dishes, the focus at Mamma is modern Mediterranean cuisine. Menus are inspired by the incredible produce available to the region, with quality ingredients sourced from Capri fishermen and smallholders from Anacapri.

Before dinner comes the aperitif. At sundown, as the sun begins to fade, head to the bar for the Gin Mare sprinkled with basil leaves, or the Botanist, garnished with peppermint and apple slice.

And the aperitif, of course, is best enjoyed after a day of lounging poolside, watching the yachts sail by softly and slowly.

Sitting at the terrace overlooking the sea at golden hour, it comes as no surprise that the Italians coined the phrase, la dolce vita.

We think it just might have been invented here.
