Gail Elliott on taking care of one's self
Meet the divine model who rose to fame in the 80’s.
She has worked and collaborated with some of the best names in fashion and beauty including photographers Mario Testino and Steven Meisel, designers Calvin Klein,Versace and Dolce & Gabbana and model Cindy Crawford who has become a dear friend.
We talk to Elliott about her approach to beauty and self-care.
On her approach to beauty
Simple, Necessary (to take care of ones self) & Enjoyable ( I like to nurture and take care of myself).
Her morning beauty routine
A cup of hot water with a squeeze of half a fresh lemon. A quick all-over body scrub with a hand mitt to increase circulation and remove dead skin making my skin feel soft. I tend not to use water on my face so use a toner on a cotton pad to refresh. Depending on which country I’m in, I use an Ultra Ceuticals moisturiser or a sunscreen. Over the years I have been lucky enough to try many brands and I find Ultra Ceuticals really works for me. I also use La Mer if I’m flying or need a heavier moisturiser – I find La Mer products also amazing for the body – lighter lotions for warmer climates and their heavier creams for colder climates.
Her daytime make-up look
I don’t ever wear foundation all over my face, I find the look too heavy so just use a concealer to cover any pink areas under my nose and on my chin. I don’t use under-eye concealer unless I’m on a photo shoot as it’s too heavy – I kind of like that “Italian Vogue” slightly dark, interesting, under the eye look! I like to frame the eye and this is very easily done with a flat brown Mac eyeshadow applied with a brush to shape the outer corners of the eyebrow. I use the same shade smudged under the eye, a slick of black Maybelline mascara (it’s the best!).
Her evening make-up look
A black eyeshadow. I use a Benefit pink/beige pencil to line the lower inside rims of my eyes to make them appear brighter, a slick of Nars lipstick in Belle Du Jour followed by my one of many ModelCo lip glosses in various shades of beige. ModelCo is a great brand, it’s very versatile, offers so many beauty categories, it’s great quality, affordable and chic.
Before bed I remove my eye make up with either L’Oreal or Vichy eye make up remover – they’re both light, fresh and non oily. Because I don’t use foundation I cleanse with a toner and moisturise with Ultraceuticals I also spray lavender oil on my pillow or around my seat on the aeroplane to help me relax and have a good nights sleep.
On her favourite fragrances
Tom Ford – Tobacco Vanilla for evening.
Chanel No 19 for daytime. I also love Chanel No 5 dry body oil spray and using this as a body moisturising base as it mixes well with other perfumes.
Beauty rules she follows
WATER!!! Very cliche but true – water plumps the skin and makes you look and feel fresh & hydrated!
